The Jerónimos Monastery, built in the Manueline style, is a masterpiece of Portuguese architecture from the 16th century. On the other side of the gardens, next to the river, is the Padrão dos Descobrimentos, which evokes Portuguese overseas expansion and synthesizes a glorious past.
